Hello all! I have attached a link on the Convention of the Rights of the Child.
This will give you an idea of what I am learning at school and the premise for this whole discussion.

  2. With a greater number of our nations school children falling further and further behind, I cannot think of a better time for this campaign to become better understood by all. Having spent the last four years on the inside of CPS it has become very clear how common it is for our children's basic rights to be ignored. I am all for taking part in helping myself and others understand better the impact of how neglecting children's rights will have on everyones future and what we can do to help make a difference.

  3. While the US is still in the ratification process of the CRC treaty it seems to me that we as a nation are doing a far better job of upholding these principals than many of the countries that have adopted the articles. That's not to say we don't have room and need to grow. I feel that we as a nation do a great job of protecting our youth and providing safe havens for them to develop. However we are falling severely behind on health issues i.e. childhood obesity and also education where we are a dull glimmer of the academics of Japan and China.

  4. Children's rights. All children have rights, like any human being, however they learn from their parents about exceptable ways to speak to adults and to express feeling of being wronged. If students rights are not being met, is it the children's job to speak up against their parents, is it the schools or the counties. At what point does the government interfer in lack of students rights....how loud does a student have to be to recieve attention.

Children all around the world, including the U.S. are constantly being stripped of thier rights from everything from food to personal safety to education. How as educators can we assure that our students are living in the light that their rights provide for them? At what point can we negate the parents role as guardian and interfer with the up bringing of a student?

  5. Reflection:

Amber- I found it interesting your perspective on the rights of the child being ignored and as a result lack of education for children in Chicago public schools. Is this due to teacher's rights being ignored as well? H

Kristin-yes, the US is now aware of the issues with Children's health. Also Obama giving children the opportunity to listen to their President speak. Is this a right for the child as well? Others would argue not.

Anna- How loud does the student have to be to receive attention? Is this something that could be fostered in the classroom at home? Including the child as a community member? Listening and valuing their thoughts and ideas as well.

  6. Anna: You make a very good point about parents' roles. In my role as a school psychologist I meet far too many parents who give up on the job of parenting and there is little to no support for them. Too many people think it is "instinctual", but the fact is parenting is a learned skill. When parents tell me it is my responsibility to get a child to behave because they "can;'t do anything with him"(or her), I know the situation is bleak.

  7. From my perspective, we are falling behind in education because it is not a priority for us. Too many parents do not expect the best from their children and do not work cooperatively with educators. In years past, parents and teachers worked together and supported one another for the good of the child. It is not uncommon for teachers to be threatened by students and parents to say that teachers deserve it and perhaps should be sued! Education does not just happen in school, but in the hours outside of school as well. With that said, I also realize that there are teachers out there who should not be in education because the needs of the children do not come first.
